Hiking and Orienteering in El Berrueco

1st ESO students went on a field trip to El Berrueco countryside to practice the orienteering skills they have learned in PE class. We wanted to share what some students wrote about their experience on the trip! This is what Sergio and Roberto wanted to say about it!

What did we do?

We walked in the country from the top of a mountain to a cathedral.
We passed through a bridge and there was a dry river.
We had groups of 12 people and we used a compass to go the right way.
We saw many different animals. For example: horses, donkeys, birds and cows.
When we finished the route, we had a sandwich in a park.

What did you like the most?

We liked when we saw a donkey on the way and also when our teacher Fausto frightened us!
Additionally, Roberto´s group got lost and a monitor had to help them to continue the route.
We had a very good time and we laughed a lot with friends and teachers.
The weather was very good, it was hot.

What did you learn with the activity?

We learned how to use a compass properly and not to get lost in the country.
We also learned how to work in groups and to be with teachers doing an outdoor activity.
We learned to appreciate nature and look after the environment. It was a beautiful place and we liked it very much!

Orienteering Excursion

1st ESO students went on a field trip to El Berrueco countryside to practice the orienteering skills they have learned in PE class. We wanted to share what some students wrote about their experience on the trip! This is what Sandra and Ainhoa wanted to share about their adventure.

What did we do?
We went to the countryside Berrocales, a beautiful place.
We went to do an orientation activity. It was amazing.
We saw a lot of things! For example: horses, a donkey, cows, an eagle...

What did you like the most?
The most amazing thing was that there were no teachers with us; we only had a compass and our friends.
What we liked the most is that we went without teachers.
The trip was truly amazing and the landscapes we saw were beautiful.

What did you learn with the activity?
What we learned is that we are able to guide ourselves using a compass.
Also, we must take care of the environment.

How to use the snipping tool to take screenshots

Some of the 1st years might be struggling when saving their infographic.
Although it is true that easel.ly does not allow us to save high quality images if we don't have a pro account, there are several ways to save our project:

1- We can select the low quality image (which will still be good enough)

2- We can take a screenshot with the snipping tool (Recortes):
This can be done in any computer, regardless the OS. I will show you some videos

  •  How to snip in Windows 7:

  • Windows 8:

  • Windows 10:

  • Mac:

I hope this will be easy enough.

How to create an infographic

Some of your teachers might have already told you that you will be working on a project during this last term.

This project will involve several subjects, and the final product that you will have to create is an infographic. In case you are wondering what this means, it is basically a "nice poster" that looks really pro. It should contain data and images.

In this example, you can see information on soccer teams all over the world.
Although we will not be dealing with soccer, 1st years will be dealing with the world: each class will be a continet, and they will be divided into different countries.
There are several apps and websites to help you create one, but he most recommended one for this particular project is easel.ly. When you access the webpage, the first thing you see is a video explaining how to use it:
Youtube offers more thorough tutorials explaining exactly how to get started:

I hope that by watching these videos, and with the explanations given in class, you will find it easier to do it.

In order to make your infographic look even more pro, here is a tip:

Whenever you are looking for an image that you would like to insert, make sure that you download it using the .png extension:
You just need to add "png" after the word when you are searching in Google Images.

In order to check if the image really has this format, click on it.

If it has squares in the background, it is the right kind of image:

If it doesn't, if will show a white background whenever you paste it on your infographic:

You can see the difference in the English blog, by Laura, because it has a blue background

Earth Day

Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year.

"Earth Song" it is a Michael Jackson's ballad that incorporates elements of blues, gospel and opera. It was his first song that overtly dealt with the environment and animal welfare.

The song was the last song to be rehearsed by Jackson, shortly after midnight on June 25, 2009, making it the final song ever performed by Michael Jackson.

Did you know that some of us are strongly influenced by certain Urban Tribes?
It's hard to accept it at first, but surely you can easily get identified with some of their features. Have a go and try to guess if this happens to you.

These projects and  presentations have been designed by some students of I4F.
We hope you like them.

As all of you know, International Women's Day is on 8th March. Women have been working on women's rights for ages. One of their main goals is to avoid gender violence. To our surprise, we have discovered that gender violence also happens among teenagers. For this reason, I4F students have launched a campaign against it. If you are interested in finfing out more about it, have a look and visit their sites.

Aranjuez

As a reward for winning the first part of the "Aulas de Oro" contest, some of the 1st and 2nd year ESO students from Torrejón and Loeches are going to Aranjuez next Wednesday.

Before going there, it would be nice to have some information about what we are going to see there. It is difficult to think about Aranjuez without some specific music coming to our minds.

Let's watch this video and listen to the music with our eyes closed, to see what it tells to our heart...
Indeed, it is the "Concierto de Aranjuez", composed by Joaquín Rodrigo, and performed Paco de Lucía.

The part that you have just listened to is called the "Adagio", and it is the second movement.

Many musicians have attempted to perform it, but in my opinion,
nobody can beat Paco de Lucía's version, which has brought many people to tears.

In this video, we learn why Joaquín Rodrigo, a blind musician, decided to compose it.

The music you have just listened to is said to be a dialogue between Rodrigo and God, trying to understand why something so tragic had happened to him.

Joaquín Rodrigo and his wife had just lost a child, and she was very ill.

Now, we are going to focus on what we are going to see:

If you click the following links you will be able to access some guides to the palace:

Guia teatralizada - español

Official guide - Spanish and English

Last, but not least, here is a link to a folder with audios that can serve as a guide to the palace. They are in English, and it would be really advisable to download them and save them onto your mobile phones.
